The Clegg Venus was a deluxe SSB-capable 6M transceiver from the
mid-to-late 1960's. I couldn't afford a commercial piece of gear like that at
the time so was using a Tapetone converter and Hallicrafters SX-73 to receive
with plus an 815 (dual tetrode) transmitting mixer to put my Phasemaster II-B
on 50 MHz. SSB. Since most activity was still on the A.M. mode, a homebrew
829B AM rig modulated with PP 807's was used for most contacts.
I worked 48 states from three different QTH's in Wisconsin, but never worked
nor heard Alaska or Hawaii. I had to move to Nevada in 1977 to earn a 50 MHz.
W.A.S. award with Rhode Island being the toughest state.
